Lightning Blamed for Brush Fires

Firefighters blame lightning for 4 brush fires that broke out yesterday along the Treasure Coast.

They included one that charred 40 acres in Hobe Sound.

Officials with the Florida Forest Service say this isn't the typical rainy season.  There has been a lot of lightning but little rain to douse the flames.

Homeowners are urged to cut down any excess brush that hangs too close to their homes.

Here are some tips to prevent damage to your home in the event of a wildfire, from the U.S. Fire Administration and FEMA:

1) Remove pine needles and dry leaves from within 5 feet of your home.

2) Sweep porches and decks to clear pine needles and leaves.

3) Keep wood piles 30 feet from your home.
